A county split by the Balcones Fault
McLennan County is divided from southwest to northeast by the Balcones Fault. The east is Blackland Prairie with deep, black shrink-swell clays. The west is Grand Prairie with shallow, stony soils over limestone. Your side of the fault shapes what system your property can use.
- East (Mart, Riesel, Robinson): deep clay, slow absorption
- West (McGregor, Crawford, Woodway): shallow soil over limestone
- Brazos and Bosque river bottoms: low areas that can stay wet
Permits & inspections
One permit office for the county
Under a City–County agreement, the Waco-McLennan County Public Health District (Environmental Health, On-Site Sewage Facilities Program) runs the septic program for McLennan County, the cities in the county and the City of Waco. It permits new systems and repairs, inspects installations, investigates complaints and tracks aerobic maintenance.
Around the county
The Brazos River crosses the county from northwest to southeast, and the Bosque River branches meet at Lake Waco. Towns like West, Mart, Moody, Crawford and Riesel are surrounded by farm and ranch land where septic and aerobic systems are the norm.

Representative project
Drain field repair in clay soil east of Waco
[Replace with a real job.] A family east of Waco had standing water over their drain field after every rain. We traced it to a tilted distribution box sending all the effluent down one line. Levelling the box and replacing a crushed line restored even distribution.

Who regulates septic systems in McLennan County?
The Waco-McLennan County Public Health District runs the OSSF program for the whole county under a City–County agreement. It enforces Texas Health & Safety Code Chapter 366 and 30 TAC Chapter 285, issues permits, inspects systems and investigates complaints.
Do I need a septic permit on 10 or more acres in McLennan County?
Texas has a limited exemption for a single-family home on 10 or more acres when the system is at least 100 feet from the property line and meets other conditions. Local rules can be stricter, so check with the Health District before building. We can check for you.
What towns in McLennan County do you serve?
All of them, including Waco, Hewitt, Woodway, Robinson, McGregor, Lorena, China Spring, Bellmead, Lacy Lakeview, West, Mart, Moody, Crawford, Riesel and Bruceville-Eddy, plus the unincorporated areas in between.
Are aerobic systems common in McLennan County?
Yes. The clay soils east of the Balcones Fault and the shallow soils to the west often limit conventional drain fields, so many homes, especially newer rural builds, use aerobic systems that need regular maintenance and reporting.
